How the South African passport photo process works
A South African passport photo is 35×45 mm on a plain, light-coloured background, taken front-facing with a neutral expression. The same format is used for South African passports and ID documents. The photo is shot to spec and submitted with your application to the South African passport authority, so it must be a true, recent, unedited likeness — front view, eyes open, mouth closed.
